Santa, Mrs. Claus visit Felton

FELTON — To help with community outreach, the town of Felton decided to try something new this holiday season by calling on Santa Claus himself to offer assistance.

With gift bags filled with candy for every visiting child and four bikes ready to raffle off, Santa and Mrs. Claus patiently visited with area children Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week at town hall, a first for the town of Felton.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t be out on the porch,” Mrs. Claus said jokingly Tuesday night while the rain came down in sheets outside.

Inviting Santa and Mrs. Claus to town ahead of their once-a-year Christmas night travels was the idea of Council member Anthony Carol, a five-year veteran to Felton’s town council and it’s first African-American member.

“I’m more of a community minded person. They do Halloween, but I don’t participate in that holiday. So, I thought, what about having Santa and Mrs. Claus,” he said.

In the past, the town of Felton hosted a Family and Friends Day. Due to a lack of volunteers, the event has not happened in recent years.

“But I said we’ve got new blood in the town. Why don’t we try to revamp that? If you look at the town of Felton, there’s really not a lot here,” Mr. Carol said.

Before he came to Felton, Mr. Carol lived in New Jersey where, he said, there were a lot of activities to keep locals and visitors busy.

“But Felton is a small town and we don’t have a lot of resources,” he added. “When I suggested Santa and Mrs. Claus and the council said, ‘man, that’s a good idea, let’s go ahead and do it…’ It just was a nice thing. I see this as a continual idea.”

Police Chief Levi Brown said he was excited to see the project come to fruition and even helped secure the bicycles for the raffles as an added bonus.
