A patient’s story

la-red-dcf-fund-for-womenAfter discovering a lump in her breast, 18-year-old Kiara Gibbs of Milford said she called her doctor to be seen right away. But, that wasn’t possible for another two weeks.

“It was a pretty serious issue because of my family history, so I called La Red and I was seen that day,” she said.

La Red Health Center’s Dr. Seema Tayal examined Ms. Gibbs and discovered two masses and immediately sent her for a breast ultrasound.

“It was really good to have someone on my side,” Ms. Gibbs said of the experience.

The ultrasound confirmed the masses.

A biopsy following the ultrasound revealed that the masses were benign, but Ms. Gibbs’ story won’t end there.

With the help of La Red Health Center, follow-up care has already been arranged to include continuous monitoring with ultrasounds in a timely manner given her family history of breast cancer.

“I was amazed by their timeliness. It all was just very, very good,” she said

The friendliness of the staff at La Red Health Center also helped calm some of the Milford resident’s nerves.

“I’ve grown to love Dr. Tayal. She’s very caring, very loving and a motherly figure. She’s pretty on it and that put me at ease,” Ms. Gibbs said.

A $15,000 grant from the Fund for Women at the Delaware Community Foundation recently helped La Red Health Center expand its women’s health services in northern Sussex County.

This grant was made available after the local area, including Milford and surrounding areas, was identified by the federal government as a medically underserved area. It will go towards helping fill a health care void where the provider supply has previously been very limited while women’s health care needs remain abundant.

La Red Health Center, the only ambulatory care center with a sliding fee scale serving Sussex County, was presented the award at a ceremony at the Duncan Center in Dover on May 12.

Ms. Gibbs said she is grateful La Red Health Center is now in her own backyard.

“I don’t know what would have happened if they didn’t see me that day,” she said. “I am thankful for Dr. Tayal and all of them.”
