MILFORD — Finding suitable healthcare for your children shouldn’t be difficult.

But when James Boyton and his family, including two children, moved to southern Delaware from upstate New York, the challenge of finding a pediatrician proved frustrating.

“We were having a hard time finding a doctor,” James said. “I called a couple places. They were like ‘no, we have a waiting list.’ And then ‘click.’”

Fortunately, one of his phone calls was to La Red Health Center. It ended up being the last call seeking healthcare that James had to make.

“It was very easy to get in, very friendly, so we just kept coming here,” said James, whose family now includes 3-month-old Benjamin. “There was no wait. It was just a pleasure dealing with everybody.”

Because it accepts most major insurance plans, along with Medicare and Medicaid, all of the Boytons can receive healthcare through La Red Health Center.

“I can come here too,” said James, who late last month was at La Red Health Center’s Milford campus while his children were receiving checkups from pediatrician Dr. Nieves M. Zaldivar, MD. “They take my insurance. They take my kids’ insurance.”

Dr. Zaldivar joined La Red Health Center with four decades of experience in pediatrics. A 1971 graduate of Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, she spent more than 20 years practicing at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Planning to semi-retire when she moved to Delaware about 10 years ago, Dr. Zaldivar instead joined Nemours. An opportunity to join the team at La Red Health Center came next.

“When La Red told me they had an opening for a pediatrician, I thought that would be a really excellent fit,” said Dr. Zaldivar, who is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“What I like about children is they might get very sick, however, they get better very quickly and throughout the whole thing they are smiling, and running and playing. And what I like about La Red is they are not looking for the money. They are looking to take care of the child.”
