New nurse practitioner joins team at La Red Health Center

MILFORD – Not just anyone can become a nurse.

Above all, the perfect candidate needs compassion. Ericka Daniel, who joined the team at La Red Health Center in March as a family nurse practitioner, certainly meets that criterion.

“I’ve always liked to help underserved people,” said Ms. Daniel. “Those are my people.”

And the people she helps treat are benefiting from Ms. Daniel’s wealth of education and experience in the nursing field.

Prior to joining La Red Health Center, Ms. Daniel served as family nurse practitioner and Director Clinical Services for Connections Community Services Program in Georgetown. She also worked as a staff registered nurse at Bayhealth Medical Center in Milford, and was a member of the Delaware Technical and Community College adjunct faculty.

Ms. Daniel received her master of science in nursing, family nurse practitioner from Wilmington University in May 2015. She also holds a bachelor of science in nursing, and is a member of the American Association of Nurses, American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Socie-ty.

“The role has changed so much,” said Ms. Daniel, who entered the field as a nurse practitioner nearly two decades ago before serving as a registered nurse for 18 years. “Entry level was typically an associates (de-gree), but now there is so much more education available.”

Since joining La Red Health Center, Ms. Daniel said she has had the opportunity to help numerous people. Some of the ways she has been able to make a difference in a person’s life while there, however, were a little surprising to her at first.

“It’s nothing near what I thought it was going to be, and it’s been even better than I anticipated,” said Ms. Dan-iel. “So many people haven’t had regular healthcare. They don’t know what they are missing. There’s a lot of ways we educate (patients) to help them help themselves.

“It’s very different than other settings,” she added. “And even if there is just one person a day I can do some-thing for, it’s worth it. I truly can’t express how much I love my job.”

La Red Health Center, a multi-site health center in Sussex County, provides quality patient-centered care to the diverse members of the community. Their centers provide primary healthcare for all ages as well as behav-ioral health services, prenatal and women’s healthcare. Dental services are available in the Georgetown office.
