Tell us about your agriculture experience in Lake Forest?

“I have been in the FFA for seven years now; I started in middle school. I have my state star in agriculture business. I’m in the animal science pathway because I’d really like to go pre-vet in college and work with large domesticated animals like horses.”

Why did you get involved in agriculture?

“My dad was in the FFA. He wasn’t very active, but told me about it. His best friend was a state officer. I didn’t expect to be where I am now. I just thought it was another organization.”

Tell us about your leadership in FFA?

“My freshman year, I was the only one to wear my FFA jacket to meetings. I was the junior advisor my sophomore year, the vice president my junior year and now the president my senior year.

“Now, I also hold a state office: the sentinel. Basically, I’m stationed by the door, care for the meeting room paraphernalia and welcome people. But we all pretty much do the same things.”

Why did you run for state office?

“Ms. [Allison] Scott told me a while ago she’d never had anyone run for state office. It’s something different so I figured why not if I have the opportunity to do it.”

What has FFA taught you?

“I’ve taken a lot from the FFA already. I’m better at communicating with people now. It’s taught me so much honestly. I’m more organized. Sometimes I feel like I’m the mayor with lots of people saying hi.”

What are your hobbies?

“I like to fish and surf fishing. I’ve also been with the same girl for three years. She’s been a lot of help. It’s funny because she’s in the BPA [Business Professionals of America] and I’m in the FFA. We planted 3-year- old Ginseng roots that just sprouted. And I help out on the beef cattle farm.”

Tell us about your business, ‘Essential Landscaping?’

“I prefer landscaping over mowing grass. It takes more design and skill.”

Would you recommend agriculture to other students?

“Just give it a chance. That’s all I did was give it a chance. I don’t think I’d be where I am without agriculture.”
