Harrington resident caught stealing cell phone

HARRINGTON – A 53-year-old Harrington resident has been arrested after witnesses caught her stealing a cell phone, according to Captain Kenny Brode.

The Harrington Police Department arrested Phyllis L. Hurd, of the 400 block of Carpenter Bridge Rd., Sept. 2 for stealing the cell phone inside Food Lion.

While on patrol, police responded to the grocery store located in the Midway Shopping Center after the victim called to report his cell phone was stolen. At the time of the incident, the victim was in line purchasing items. When he left the store, he left his phone on the counter, Captain Brode explained.

Witnesses allegedly reported to police that an unknown female took the phonee. One of the witnesses was familiar with the suspect and able to identify her as Hurd.

Police contacted the suspect via telephone and she later turned herself in to the Harrington Police Department.

She was charged with one count of theft under $1,500 where the victim is 62-years-old or older. Hurd was processed and arraigned via video phone at the Peace Court 7 and was released on $1,000 unsecured bond.
