Two arrested on drug charges in Harrington

HARRINGTON – After smelling a “strong odor of marijuana” from a vehicle traveling along Commerce Street in Harrington, police stopped and arrested two suspects.

Driver Douglas E. Butler, 21 of the 11,300 Block of 2nd St. in Bridgeville, and passenger Tasha M. Copes, 35 of the 500 Block of Orange St. in Wilmington, were both arrested May 31 after marijuana was located in their vehicle during a traffic stop at 2:58 a.m.

While on patrol, an officer was traveling behind Butler and Copes when the officer smelled the odor coming from the vehicle. The officer then stopped the vehicle.

Upon approaching the vehicle, police detected a “strong odor of marijuana” coming from the vehicle.  Police began questioning both Butler and Copes and were advised there was Marijuana in the vehicle.

A vehicle search was conducted and police located 5.4 grams of Marijuana belonging to Copes and 89.7 grams of Marijuana belonging to Butler.  Both were then taken into custody while police continued their investigation.

Copes was issued a civil summons for possession of Marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and released.

Butler was issued a criminal summons for possession and possession of drug paraphernalia and released.  A second passenger in the car was questioned but later released without being charged.
