Dist. 1 wins East Regional, headed back to Big League Softball World Series

WORCESTER, Mass. – Defending Big League Softball World Series champion District I is headed back to Roxana for a possible repeat bid.

District I by way of winning the East Regional is headed back to the Big League Softball World Series. (Special to The Journal/Cassie Scruggs)Wednesday afternoon the all-stars defeated New York, 12-3, in the Worcester, Mass., hosted East Regional tournament to earn their spot in Roxana.

Shaina Reed pitched a complete game with three strikeouts for District I. The Polytech graduate added a two-run home run at the dish to help her cause.

Haylee Scruggs went 4-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run, a pair of doubles and a single. She finished Wednesday’s championship with six RBI.

Kerrigan Simpson went 3-for-4 and scored three times, while Cassetty Howerin went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

Megan Fry, Whitney DeMora and Kasey Fry all added a run for the East champions, who will open the Big League Softball World Series Sunday, 5:30 p.m., versus District III in a rematch of last year’s championship game.
