Lake to rematch Sussex Central in softball tourney

STATEWIDE – Last but not least, the softball state tournament bracket has been released. And the top four seeds are all familiar faces – particularly for those who were fans of the sport last decade.

All opening round games are scheduled for Saturday and will be hosted by the higher-seeded team except for No. 5 Padua (15-3) vs. No. 12 Wilmington Charter (13-5). That game will be played at the Midway Little League complex.

Caravel (15-3) is the No. 1 seed and will open play with No. 16 Delaware Military Academy (10-8) at 11 a.m. DMA finished one spot behind Indian River in the playoff points standings but was awarded the berth over the Indians due to winning the Diamond State Athletic Conference and earning an automatic bid.

Henlopen Conference champion Sussex Tech (15-2) is the No. 2 seed and hosts Hodgson at 1 p.m.

Back in the tourney after a two-year hiatus is No. 3 Sussex Central (14-3), which drew a rematch against No. 14 Lake Forest (12-6), the Henlopen South champion. Central defeated Lake 7-5 when the teams met in April.

Cape Henlopen (14-4) rounds out the top four. The Vikings get No. 13 Red Lion (10-8) at 1 p.m.

Defending state champion Polytech (13-5) is in the tournament as the No. 8 seed and will host rival Caesar Rodney (13-5) at 11 a.m. The ninth-seeded Riders defeated Polytech 4-1 during the regular season.

Smyrna (13-5), as the 10th seed, is the seventh Henlopen Conference team in the field. The Eagles will play at No. 7 Appoquinimink (14-4), 3:30 p.m.

Sixth-seeded Concord (13-5) will host No. 11 Middletown (11-7) in the tourney’s other bout.

Second round games are scheduled for Tuesday. The semifinals are June 2 and the championship game is scheduled for the following Saturday, June 4.
