Roundup: Poly sweeps Lake on diamond, Smyrna does same on tennis court


Polytech 6, Lake Forest 5: The Panthers (4-0) rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to stay unbeaten.

Winning pitcher Shaina Reed struck out 11, walked only one and went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Catera Kennedy (1 RBI, 2 runs) went 2-for-3 while Kat Betts struck out five for Lake Forest, which took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The loss was Lake’s first this season.


Polytech 11, Lake Forest 4: The Panthers scored four runs in both the second and sixth innings to pull away to the Henlopen Conference victory.

Carter Chasanov hit a three-run double while Trey Obermire (2 RBI) had three of Polytech’s 12 hits. Winning pitcher Sean Hanhauser threw five strong innings,

Tyler Cauthren had two doubles while Tyler Collins also doubled for the Spartans.

The Spartans (3-2) had a three-game winning streak ended with the loss.


Smyrna 5, Lake Forest 0 (boys): Smyrna handed Lake its fifth boys’ tennis loss of the season. Spartans second doubles team of Brian Thomson and Alex Portillo played the afternoon’s closest match, falling to Smyrna’s Isaac Gaston and Max Berman 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Smyrna 5, Lake Forest 0 (girls): Lake’s girls’ tennis team lost its second straight, falling to Henlopen North foe Smyrna. Second-team doubles Olivia Hobbs and Kristen Nguyen lost a close one in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
