Spartans score lacrosse season sweep of rival Milford

MILFORD – Earlier in the week a door opened up for the Lake Forest boys’ lacrosse team.

Friday night at Milford, the Spartans took their first step through that door.

Led by senior Austin Aguilar, who scored all four of his goals in the second half, the Spartans finished off a season sweep of rival Milford with a 13-7 victory.

The win moved the Spartans to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the Henlopen South.

Currently Lake Forest is tied with Delmar in the South standings loss column thanks to Indian River’s win over the Wildcats on Wednesday. Delmar – which defeated the Spartans at home earlier in the season – comes to Lake Forest on Friday for a rematch.

Milford’s loss dropped the Buccaneers to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the South. It also likely ended any chance the Buccaneers had at repeating as the division champion.

With Friday’s rivalry bout tied 6-6 midway through the third quarter, the Spartans took the game over.

Aguilar broke the tie with 3:30 remaining in the third with a goal and scored again less than two minutes later. Sophomore Carter Kenton followed with his second goal of the game just prior to the end of the period, and Lake Forest rolled into the final 12 minutes with a 9-6 advantage.

The Spartans didn’t stop there, pushing their lead to 11-6 a minute into the fourth with goals by seniors Ben Moore (2 goals) and Dawaunta Parker (3).

Bucs senior goalie Clay Stevenson got the home crowd on its feet when he traversed the field and wound up scoring a goal to get Milford back within striking distance, but Kenton quickly answered with his hat-trick score. Aguilar then nailed the coffin shut when he scored the game’s final goal with 2:21 remaining.

Milford, which is at nonconference Concord on Monday, was led by junior Dallas Rhoades, who scored twice and tallied an assist.
