Spartans sneak into soccer state tournament

STATEWIDE – For the first time in program history, the Indian River girls’ soccer team is a state tournament No. 1 seed.

Now the Henlopen South champs will look to earn their first Division II championship in the sport.

IR (14-1), which was joined by three other Southern Division teams in the field of 12, will play the winner of Saturday’s match between No. 8 Tower Hill (11-4) and No. 9 Woodbridge (11-3-1). The second round game will be either May 25 or 26 at an as of yet to be announced time and site.

The other two South teams in the field are No. 7 Delmar (10-5), which opens against No. 10 St. Georges (10-4-1) on Saturday, and Lake Forest (8-7).

Lake, which began the season 6-0, won just two of its final nine games and had to sweat out the at-large berth. The Spartans will play No. 5 Delaware Military Academy (11-3-1) Saturday, 5 p.m., at Caravel.

In the Division I tournament, four of the eight teams in the field are from the Henlopen North.

Division I play opens next Wednesday or Thursday at as of yet to be determined sites and times.

Northern Division champ Caesar Rodney (14-1) is the No. 2 seed and will rematch No. 7 Dover (9-6). No. 6 Smyrna (9-5) plays No. 3 Middletown (12-0-2) and top-seeded Padua (15-0) drew No. 8 Sussex Tech (8-7).
